Atalanta’s Gianluca Scamacca on injury stricken period: “Most complicated phase of my life”

Serie A side Atalanta have seen Gianluca Scamacca miss almost the entire season due to injury and the striker has now opened up about his period of struggle.

The Italian spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport about his season and he described it as the ‘most complicated’ period of his life so far.

He said: “I don’t deny that it’s the most complicated phase of my sporting life. Being still for so long is a new experience, but it’s also teaching me to know myself better. Before, every difficulty seemed insurmountable, but now I’ve found an inner balance that I’ve never had.”

When asked about which injury was the toughest to digest, he spoke of the one he picked up against Torino, when he had returned to action after months but it was left curtailed quickly.

“The one in the match against Torino, without a doubt. It was like having the pitch taken away just when I was starting to see the end of the tunnel. I felt reborn, but in a few moments everything went back to square one.”

The striker was also asked about the most difficult period of his life and he spoke of the Super Cup game earlier in the season.

He said: “Watching Atalanta-Real Madrid from home. It was one of the games I would have liked to experience on the pitch more than any other, and watching in front of the TV was almost unbearable. That night I really realized what it means to be on the outside.”

Last season was an impressive one for Scamacca, who found the back of the net 12 times in the Serie A and also scored six times in the Europa League, famously impressing against Liverpool.
