Paulo Dybala situation was key reason for Daniele de Rossi’s fractured Roma relationship

Serie A giants Roma sacked Daniele de Rossi recently and while they didn’t mention much about the fractures at the club, it seems as if the Paulo Dybala situation was a key aspect that led to the bad relationship between the Giallorossi and the former manager.

Marco Conterio has reported that with Dybala’s current deal running out in 2025, it had a clause in his contract which said that if La Joya played 50 percent games in the season for 45 minutes or more, an extension would be triggered. That extension would also guarantee Dybala a wage hike.

The club suggested to De Rossi to not field Dybala too much to make sure that the extension doesn’t get triggered. This situation led to De Rossi offering to resign from the club because of the ownership’s interference into on-field matters, opening up a clear rift between the higher-ups and the manager.

This was a determining factor in the situation, leading to the eventual sacking.
